For a long time, we have known that people who display positive thinking have better emotional and physical health than those who tend to be negative. However, up until recently, science could not explain how positive thinking and health were interconnected. Recent discoveries in the field of epigenetics may provide this once elusive answer.
In this workshop we will learn the basics about genetics and epigenetics; we will discuss what epigenetics is and how it is at the crossroad between our genes and our environment. We will also discuss the biological basis of the power of positive thinking and the role epigenetics plays in the conversion of positive thinking into physical and mental well-being. Finally, we will learn and practice “designer genes” activities. Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, Liliana De Leo will guide you through “exercises” that are designed to help you put your best “genes” on.
A WE² bit about Alanna :
Dr. Alanna Grant first became interested in studying the mind-body connection over a decade ago while she was working as a registered massage therapist. Currently, she is a postdoctoral fellow in a molecular biology and genetics laboratory at the Centre de Recherche de Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. Her research focuses on identifying genes that predisposes to developing neurological and psychiatric diseases and on elucidating the biological basis behind how mutations in these genes may lead to disease symptoms. She received her doctorate from the department of Neurology & Neurosurgery at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec) in 2011. Her doctoral thesis focused on understanding how adverse events (both genetic and environmental) that occur very early in life can result in abnormal brain function and psychopathology in adulthood. She is interested in studying the interrelatedness between experience and genetics (i.e. how genetics can predispose toward an individual toward certain life-experiences and how these life-experiences can change the architecture of our DNA).
A WE² bit about Liliana :
Liliana De Leo is an entrepreneur, founder and president of Fitness Firm and Living Laughter. Her company promotes health, fitness and well-being. She completed a BA in Leisure Sciences, and is a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, Can Fit Pro Personal Trainer and CPR & First Aid Instructor. Since 2006, Liliana has given various workshops on many different topics promoting personal and professional development. Her brand of humor and strong public-speaking skills give her classes an edge she coins, the E2 effect; Educational and Entertaining. She became a Laughter Yoga Leader in 2006 and due to a growing demand for her services; she became a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher in 2011. She now certifies others who share a passion at offering Laughter Yoga classes in the work place. Her laughter yoga and management reinforcement workshops inspires many to include the “Living Laughter™” experience in their lives.
